San Diego Unified School District Volunteer Program

The Volunteer Program provides support and guidance to schools to help them facilitate their parent and community engagement programs. Currently, more than 29,000 volunteers work in a variety of capacities in the San Diego Unified School District.

Volunteer

These volunteers - parents, guardians, grandparents, business/community partners, community members, the military, K-12 and college students, senior citizens, and others - represent the economic, social, racial, religious and educational backgrounds within the San Diego community.

Volunteers act as tutors/mentors, provide assistance in the classroom, participate as senior exhibition panel members, participate on business/community partnership advisory boards, assist in the main office, in the library/media centers and with fundraising efforts for school foundations, scholarships, field trips, etc.

SDUSD Administrative Procedure 4595 outlines procedures for school volunteer programs. In order to provide students with a safe environment and allow for a variety of opportunities for volunteering, volunteer participation is classified into four categories. Depending on the category, certain screening processes must be completed by district staff prior to volunteering. Volunteer Screening Requirements: English Spanish

Getting Started

All schools are asked to designate a school site volunteer coordinator. Training sessions are held each year for volunteer coordinators. These sessions provide participants with valuable information, strategies and resources to help strengthen and support community and parent outreach efforts at school sites.

All volunteer work must be done under the direction of an assigned teacher, site volunteer coordinator, principal or vice principal. Volunteers must comply with the district's volunteer screening requirements.

Community members interested in volunteering should:

  1. Contact the school 619-430-1200 to ask to speak with the volunteer coordinator. If the site volunteer coordinator is unavailable, contact the district volunteer coordinator at (619) 725-5594.
  2. Comply with appropriate volunteer screening requirements. (English) (Spanish)
  3. Complete and return a school volunteer application. (English) (Spanish)
  4. Read and acknowledge understanding of the Volunteer Code of Conduct: (English) (Spanish)
  5. Provide results of Tuberculin skin test.
